Effects of Internet-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: A Systematic Review

Abstract
Purpose: The effects of Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) program for social anxiety disorder have been tested in several studies. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize the effects of the program and investigate characteristics of studies that is related to the effects. In particular, this study focuses on the role of therapists who support the program.

Methods: This systematic review was conducted with references that have characteristics of experimental or quasi-experimental designs studies between 2006 and 2015, searched for databases: RISS, PsycINFO, PubMED. The primary search items are `Social Anxiety Disorder`, `Social Phobia`, `Internet-based treatment`, and `Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy`. Out of 179 articles, 13 articles were selected for this review.

Results: This systematic review found that ICBT with or without therapists` support significantly reduced social interaction anxiety, social phobia, general anxiety, and depression. In addition, the ICBT with therapists` support was more effective than the ICBT without therapists` support.

Conclusion: This findings indicate that ICBT has potential in evidence-based treatment for social anxiety disorder. Not only so, but ICBT is expected to increase availability and accessibility in the mental health care for patients with social anxiety disorder.
